Defeat moves QPR closer to relegation

Everton 2 QPR 0

QPR’s already slim chance of staying up receded even further as they were soundly beaten at Goodison Park.

They went behind when Darron Gibson’s 40th-minute effort deflected in off Clint Hill, and Victor Anichebe’s second-half goal crushed any real hope of an R’s comeback.

Rangers made a decent start, with Junior Hoilett firing just wide before Loic Remy’s stinging shot brought a good save from Everton keeper Tim Howard.

But when Gibson’s 25-yarder was inadvertently diverted past keeper Julio Cesar by the QPR captain, Harry Redknapp’s side lost the initiative.

Everton controlled the second 45 minutes and twice went close to scoring before they eventually doubled their lead.

Anichebe missed a great chance, shooting against the post after being set up by Kevin Mirallas, and Cesar did well to keep out a header from Sylvain Distin.

But Cesar could do nothing when Distin met Leighton Baines’ corner at the far post and Anichebe added the finishing touch.
