Southampton v QPR player ratings

QPR were humbled by Southampton, who punished some woeful defending at St Mary’s. Here’s how we rated each Rangers player in the 4-1 defeat.

Pierce Charles: 7

Left badly exposed by Rangers’ poor defending, Charles produced a fine save to keep out Keven Schlotterbeck’s header in the first half, and in the second he denied former QPR man Ryan Manning.

Kealey Adamson: 5

Adamson has impressed this season and received deserved praise. But he endured a difficult afternoon here, with Southampton causing him major problems on the flank. He looked defensively suspect and struggled in possession, but was not given any help by Kwame Poku in front of him.

Jimmy Dunne: 6

Unlucky when Cameron Bragg’s shot deflected in off him for the second goal. A great block by Dunne in the first half prevented a certain goal.

Ronnie Edwards: 6

A significantly better performance against his former club than last season, but he was at fault for the all-important second goal when he meekly headed the ball to the left instead of clearing his lines. The highlight of Edwards’ performance came when he did superbly to win the ball and create a chance for Richard Kone.

Boy Kemper: 7

Unable to prevent the opening goal, when he was turned on the edge of the six-yard box, but it was another very decent performance by the Dutch left-back – and Rangers almost equalised when Paul Smyth headed over from Kemper’s cross.

Glen Kamara: 5

Another player who has impressed this season but was well below par. He struggled in midfield as Southampton took control.

Jonathan Varane: 5

Started full of enthusiasm and energy, clearly keen to make an impact. And he had some good early moments, winning possession and covering plenty of ground. But a lack of quality on the ball showed more and more, and his performance disintegrated, particularly after the interval.

Harvey Vale: 5

Offered very little before going off just before the hour mark. His deliveries were poor.

Kwame Poku: 5

Like Vale, Poku offered very little before going off along with him – and that includes offering little in terms of defensive cover. Poku also missed a great chance to equalise when he fired into the side netting in the first half.

Paul Smyth: 6

Worked hard in attack, as always. Had a couple of chances but headed over from Kemper’s cross and had another effort saved.

Richard Kone: 7

Scored a fine goal, having earlier gone close with a deflected shot after being set up by Edwards. Led the line quite well, but his fellow attackers failed to provide any spark.

Koki Saito: 6

Quiet after his second-half introduction.

Karamoko Dembele: 6

Set up Kone’s goal.
