QPR boss responds to criticism of style of play

QPR: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has insisted that criticism of his style of play is wide of the mark.

Rangers were thrashed 6-0 at home by Newcastle last week and were dismal in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield.
Some fans on social media, many of whom believe Rangers should play with two strikers, have been critical of Hasselbaink, suggesting he is too conservative.

“Conservative? I don’t think so. I don’t agree with that,” said the Dutchman.

“We’ve had two out and out wingers, a number 10 and a striker.

“When you’re winning, everything is good. When you’re losing, questions are going to be asked. That’s football and that’s normal.”

Hasselbaink admitted after the loss at Huddersfield that his players’ confidence had been affected by the Newcastle debacle.

However, speaking ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie against Sunderland, he said he remains confident they will turn things around.

“There is no doubt in my mind about the character of my players – no doubt whatsoever,” he declared.

“We’ve had a hit – a punch – and it’s now about getting back to where we were and better that.

“It’s a test, but we have to stay calm, relaxed and focused. We need to give the players confidence. My job is about getting the players back on track.

“It’s a time to stay calm and to stay with your beliefs. It’s time to work and stand up and take your responsibilities.”
