QPR boss on Swansea loss, Barbet, Amos’ injury, Hugill, Cameron, dropping Rangel and more

Mark Warburton spoke about a number of issues after his side’s home defeat against Swansea. Here’s some of what the QPR manager had to say.

On whether he thought Rangers played well

“I can’t stand here and say that. It’s a results industry we’re in.

“I thought in the first half it was nip and tuck. Then we gave away a soft goal and had to come back from 1-0 down.

“We spoke about stepping up the intensity and the movement off the ball, and we did that.

“I thought we were good in the second half. But it’s not enough. You can be good and create chances, but you have to put the ball in the back of the net. Goals change games.

“We get the equaliser and I think only one team’s going to win it. The crowd were behind us and I was very pleased with parts of our football.

“To then concede four minutes later, in a very naive manner, we have to learn from that.

“We have to be better than that because we worked so hard to get the equaliser and at that point in my mind there’s one team going on to win.

“We have to be more clinical in front of their goal and make better decisions in front of our goal.”

On his new signings needing time to settle

“There’s no excuses, we lost a game of football. But we’re four games in. I think we had 11 new players in the dressing room tonight and 15 overall, so it’s naturally going to take time to bed in.

“But you’ve seen that when we get it right we look a very good attacking team with some real quality.

“I’m frustrated for the players, because to put on that second half and get no rewards, that’s the hardest part.”

On Luke Amos, who went off with a hamstring injury

“We’ll see how he is. We’ll assess him. He felt some tightening, so we’ll be careful.

“I hope very much (he’ll be OK). We’ll assess him in the morning and see how he is.”

On Geoff Cameron going off

“It was just a bit of tightening and again we’ve got to be careful. It’s early in the season and the boys are just getting accustomed to the physical demands.

“Playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday presents demands for the players. I’d rather be cautious than go on 10 minutes too long.”

On Yoann Barbet giving away a penalty

“I think you’ve seen how good he can be. You’ve seen his passing qualities and that he reads the game very well.

“I think he’s been very good. Yoann and Grant Hall have worked very hard to form a good partnership.

“But we haven’t had a clean sheet yet and that’s down to the team, not just down to Yoann or Grant.

“I haven’t seen a team cut us open yet. We’ve been the masters of our own downfall in certain parts.”

On Jordan Hugill

“He’s scoring goals but – and he’d be the first to admit this – we can all do more.

“As a young team, four games in, where can we improve? How can we improve? What do we have to do?”

On dropping Angel Rangel

“It was very hard on Angel, who has been outstanding. But I thought Todd Kane would give us a real attacking impetus down the right side and looked for Todd and Bright to combine well. I was happy with that.

“Angel is a top pro who has done so well for us. But we’ve got a squad and a lot of good players who want to be on the pitch.”
