QPR boss hails Ferdinand despite error

Harry Redknapp praised Rio Ferdinand after the defender’s QPR debut – despite the lapse which led to Hull’s winner at Loftus Road.

Former England and Manchester United star Ferdinand allowed James Chester to get in front of him and head home James Quinn’s corner early in the second half.

Ferdinand’s all-round display was impressive, however, and boss Redknapp felt the 1-0 defeat was harsh on Rangers.

Redknapp said: “Rio was excellent. I thought it was almost a masterclass in how to play three at the back. His touch, passing and reading of the game were fantastic.

“The fella (Chester) just spun off him. It’s football and it can happen. We just got done on a set play.

“I was very pleased with our performance. Sometimes you have days it doesn’t go your way.

“I thought in the first half we played ever so well and we created some good chances.”

Rangers were boosted by the inclusion of Loic Remy, who started despite having not featured in any pre-season matches.

The France striker caused Hull plenty of problems up front alongside Charlie Austin, who missed a late penalty.

“We’ve not had a good pre-season – the opposition we had wasn’t ideal,” Redknapp added.

“We’ve had to rush players like Remy back and if he stays he’ll only get fitter. It was encouraging. We played better than we did at times in the Championship last season.”
