QPR boss explains decision to take duo off

Chris Ramsey said Charlie Austin and summer signing Tjaronn Chery were taken off in the 2-2 draw with Cardiff because they were showing signs of fatigue.

Both players were substituted by Ramsey for the second league game running, with striker Austin having been affected by a pre-season injury and Chery seemingly needing to build up his fitness following the Dutch playmaker’s move to Loftus Road.

Chery showed glimpses of his ability before fading – just as he did in the defeat at Charlton last weekend.

“Because the team has been brought together quite late we haven’t been able to be privy to what conditioning they’ve done,” said head coach Ramsey, who put the disappointing result down to Rangers’ failure to take several chances.

“He [Chery] looked like he’d given his all and there wasn’t much left in the tank.”

Austin, meanwhile, was withdrawn after his goal, which put QPR 2-0 up, appeared to be enough to give them their first league win of the campaign.

Ramsey explained: “It was just a precaution. Sometimes you watch players and think ‘He’s given his all and it’s time to take him off and put someone else on.’ Charlie did well today.”
