Rangers end season with defeat at Anfield
Liverpool 1 QPR 0
Relegated QPR bowed out of the top flight with a defeat at Anfield.
Liverpool dominated the game and Philippe Coutinho’s 23rd-minute goal was enough to see off the Premier League’s bottom side, who felt they should have been awarded a first-half penalty for Lucas Leiva’s trip on Loic Remy.
Rangers gave a full debut to 20-year-old right-back Michael Harriman, who cleared an early header from Coutinho off the line.
But Coutinho opened the scoring on 22 minutes, firing in from 25 yards following great work by youngster Jordon Ibe.
Liverpool continued to press in the second half and the retiring Jamie Carragher almost scored in his final match for the club.
With everyone in the ground – including Rangers, it sometimes seemed – wanting Carragher to try his luck, the former England defender did so with a long-range shot which struck the post.
QPR: Green; Harriman, Onuoha, Hill, Traore, Townsend, Derry, Mbia, Park (Hoilett 80), Remy (Granero 45), Zamora (Mackie 73).
Subs not used: Murphy, Fabio, Bothroyd, Ehmer.
