Holloway on Chery’s confidence dip, Washington’s role and QPR’s ‘almost finished article’

Ian Holloway appraised some of his players’ performances after QPR’s 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa, their fifth consecutive defeat. Here’s some of what he had to say…

Jake Bidwell

“We didn’t have a final ball. Bidwell’s crossing is normally brilliant. He apologised at half-time, but I said ‘don’t be stupid Bids, just miss out that first man’ because there was runners in there.”

Idrissa Sylla

“I knew we needed what he offers. It needed to stick, and when it did start sticking, we then worked.

“He needed a cross, and we hardly got past anybody to get a cross in.

“That’s the first time I’ve seen Sylla, he’s probably trained three or four times. I can’t wait to get him out on the training ground and work on him.”

Conor Washington

“Conor gave me everything but that’s not his actual best scenario up there [on his own], and when we go two up front we’re a little bit light and short across the midfield. In the right scenario he will score.”

Tjaronn Chery

“Tjaronn’s losing a bit of confidence. We’ve relied on two people to get us something for too long – him and Charlie Austin. But we’ve all got to step up to the plate now.

“In my first game he missed a penalty but then made two passes as good as Charlie Adam ever has – he slotted Polter through and then he put him through with the outside of his left foot.

“So he’s shown me he can do it. But he’s finding it hard because I think he wants it too much. It’s a huge responsibility.”

Jamie Mackie

“I don’t normally risk anybody – he’s been out for eight months, and he’s only played 60 minutes – but I felt we all needed him today. And he nearly got us something.

“We haven’t bought finished articles – Jamie Mackie to me is almost the finished article, and you could see that when he came on.

“I need him fit, he’s going to teach all those others loads of stuff. And they all want to learn, that’s the good thing.”
