Holloway insists QPR can improve

Ian Holloway insists he is confident QPR will improve on last season despite a perceived lack of transfer activity.

Holloway presided over an influx of January signings and two six-match losing runs after taking over as manager midway through last term, and Rangers only narrowly avoided relegation.

Many fans therefore want to see more new signings, but budgetary restrictions, largely the result of Financial Fair Play rules, mean the club’s options are somewhat limited.

But Holloway said: “I’m more than confident we are going to give ourselves a chance to be a decent team to compete in each game.

“Our challenge is very simple: if you don’t stop the goals going in and if you don’t score more you’re only going to be in a certain position. So we have a massive deficit to solve. End of.

“Do I believe I can solve that within my squad? I believe I can go so far to do that. Do I need to add one or two? I’m going to try to but it’s all about my boys working their socks off.

“I don’t care where I get them from – as long as they give me that work we will get there.

“We’re going to stick together and work our socks off for every single minute of every single game.”

Holloway also argues that the difference in QPR’s two performances against Newcastle last season show his team are heading in the right direction.

Holloway’s side battled to a draw at St James’s Park, having been humiliated 6-0 at home earlier in the campaign under his predecessor Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Holloway said: “If you look at Newcastle away last season compared to Newcastle at home, how many of them kept going? That’s all I’m asking for. All I ever ask for is for us to keep going.

“Have I got the right blend yet? We’re working on it. Give us a chance.”

  • Look, TF has no interest in the club. QPR is just a hobby for him to play with. Whilst TF and Co remain at the helm the club is going nowhere. The club has been a shambles since being taken over in the initial stages by Eccelstone and Co. Everyone thought TF was the clubs saviour, the last few years just shows how clueless he is in football management.

  • I'm really surprised of the two runs of six straight defeats and the performance against Norwich on the final day of the season that Holloway is still here. I thought he had more class and would have resigned. He did some brilliant things for the club in the past and his tarnished that by his return. His attacking the fans after the appalling tactical display against Brentford left a really bad taste in the mouth and again he's getting the sky digs in early both at the players (current group aren't good enough) and the fans (not supportive enough). I hope I'm wrong, but the first six games this season could seem him equal his own unwanted record at QPR.

  • My fellow R's. We are in a relegation battle even before the season has started. FFP or not unless TF gets the cheque book out it is League 1 come May. In 40 years supporting this lot this is the poorest squad I have seen!

  • I just hope he sees that our real problem is in the final third. A little more pace, mobility, ingenuity...I remember the effect John Spencer had on the side when all we'd had was Dichio, Gallen and Hateley. We look solid but we need midfielders who can get up or forwards who can drop back. Straight lines aren't going to get us many goals.

  • Maybe if somebody from the club explained just what the restrictions were there would be more understanding from the fans !
Training grounds , new stadium .?
You keep this lot up Ollie and you're a genius mate ... Looking forward to seeing some better days ahead at Loftus Rd ... You'll always have my support ... Never been so miserable about the season starting in almost 35 yrs . Not enough goals in this team
    I'm afraid .

  • What about the two results against Norwich? OK, so we're work in progress; fine. Just stop tinkering with the formation. It's bad enough doing from game to game, but mid-game for changes sake is nuts! Do the players know what's going to happen? Judging by the conversation between Goss and Onouha when the former came on yesterday, they do'n have a clue...
