Holloway insists QPR can improve

QPR: Ian Holloway

Ian Holloway insists he is confident QPR will improve on last season despite a perceived lack of transfer activity.

Holloway presided over an influx of January signings and two six-match losing runs after taking over as manager midway through last term, and Rangers only narrowly avoided relegation.

Many fans therefore want to see more new signings, but budgetary restrictions, largely the result of Financial Fair Play rules, mean the club’s options are somewhat limited.

But Holloway said: “I’m more than confident we are going to give ourselves a chance to be a decent team to compete in each game.

“Our challenge is very simple: if you don’t stop the goals going in and if you don’t score more you’re only going to be in a certain position. So we have a massive deficit to solve. End of.

“Do I believe I can solve that within my squad? I believe I can go so far to do that. Do I need to add one or two? I’m going to try to but it’s all about my boys working their socks off.

“I don’t care where I get them from – as long as they give me that work we will get there.

“We’re going to stick together and work our socks off for every single minute of every single game.”

Holloway also argues that the difference in QPR’s two performances against Newcastle last season show his team are heading in the right direction.

Holloway’s side battled to a draw at St James’s Park, having been humiliated 6-0 at home earlier in the campaign under his predecessor Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Holloway said: “If you look at Newcastle away last season compared to Newcastle at home, how many of them kept going? That’s all I’m asking for. All I ever ask for is for us to keep going.

“Have I got the right blend yet? We’re working on it. Give us a chance.”
