QPR need cover for Simpson, says boss

Harry Redknapp says QPR could do with adding a defender to their squad in case Danny Simpson picks up an injury during the second half of the season.

Right-back Simpson has played in every Rangers game this term and Redknapp is concerned at the lack of an alternative.

Bringing in a central defender is a possible solution as it would give the manager the safety net of being able to move Nedum Onuoha across should Simpson be unavailable.

He is currently considering signing Coll Donaldson from Scottish Championship club Livingston, an 18-year-old who is primarily a centre-back but can play in both positions.

United States international Oguchi Onyewu, brought in as defensive cover in October, is expected to leave Loftus Road when his three-month contract expires.

“We’ve only got Danny Simpson at right-back and if he couldn’t play, we’d be short,” Redknapp said.

“Luke Young’s not fit, Nedum Onuoha could go there but we might need him at centre-back, where we’re not overloaded either, so we’d be struggling.

“People say we’ve got this big squad, but we haven’t really. Danny’s played in every game and we’ve also relied on Charlie Austin up front because we’ve not got too many strikers.”
