Redknapp: No regrets over Simpson move

QPR boss Harry Redknapp has insisted he has no regrets about Danny Simpson’s move to Leicester.

Simpson, 27, had two years of his contract remaining but Rangers opted to let him go after he received a lucrative offer from the Foxes and Mauricio Isla had taken his first-team place.

Isla, signed as a wing-back, has struggled so far, partly because Redknapp has already reverted back to a four-man defence and deployed the Chilean as a right-back.

But Redknapp said: “Danny was a good lad and did a good job here, but Nedum Onuoha can play right-back in a four for me. There’s no problem there. We’re okay.”

Isla was brought in on a season-long loan from Juventus after Redknapp made it clear he wanted to use a 3-5-2 formation – a system the manager tried to introduce last season without success.

“It’s been a problem for him in so much as he’s a wing-back. He’s played right wing-back for Chile and Juventus,” Redknapp added.

“I brought him here to play right wing-back, a couple of results didn’t go our way early on and then suddenly people are saying ‘it’s the system’.

“So we went to a four [at the back] and he’s not quite the same player in a four as he is in a five.”
