QPR open talks with keeper Smithies

QPR have opened talks with Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies after agreeing a deal with the Yorkshire club.

Smithies, 25, was left out of the squad for Huddersfield’s Championship game against Blackburn on Saturday after Rangers made an approach.

He signed a new deal in February, extending his contract until 2018, but has been given permission to discuss a move to Loftus Road.

Rangers lined up Smithies after failing to agree a fee with Southend United for the League One club’s highly-rated keeper Daniel Bentley.

They also look likely to miss out on Tim Ream despite having a £1.4m bid for the United States defender accepted by Bolton.

Ream, 27, has indicated that he wants to sign for Fulham, who have also had an offer accepted.
