Luongo praised for ‘doing the dirty stuff’

QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink praised Massimo Luongo following QPR’s 3-0 victory at Rotherham – their first win since the Dutchman took over as manager.

Summer signing Luongo was recalled to the starting line-up and responded with an impressive performance, setting up Matt Phillips for Rangers’ second goal.

“He is somebody who likes to get on the ball, who can influence strikers and who can pick a pass,” said Hasselbaink.

“On the other hand, he needed to do the dirty stuff – and he did. That was pleasing to see.”

There were also goals for Junior Hoilett and Sebastian Polter as Rangers emphatically ended their nine-match winless run.

It was a timely boost for the club following an alarming slide down the Championship table and the cut-price sale of top scorer Charlie Austin to Southampton.

“I just wanted a performance today and I knew that if we kept ourselves in the game we would have chances to win the match,” Hasselbaink said.

“I still believe we can play better and be more dominant, but today we showed everybody that we cared and we need to keep that.”

Meanwhile, Rangers are discussing a potential deal to sell Matt Phillips to Watford.
