Cargiant plan ‘compelling’ Old Oak proposal

Cargiant say a public consultation on its “firm and compelling” regeneration proposals for Old Oak will begin early next year.

QPR’s Malaysian owners, fronted by chairman Tony Fernandes, have long hoped to transform the land between Scrubs Lane and Willesden Junction into an area that would be known as New Queens Park and include a stadium as part of a sporting and leisure complex.

Rangers recently held public exhibitions and distributed 50,000 leaflets as part of their consultation and say their plans have won strong local support.

But Cargiant, which owns 47 acres of the land, have now set up Old Oak Park Ltd as part of their own regeneration project, which they say they are determined to press ahead with and will meet the London Mayor’s criteria of building 24,000 new homes and creating 55,000 jobs.

The car supermarket is owned by Geoff Warren, who has an estimated fortune of £220m and recently insisted that new stadium for QPR at Old Oak “is just not going to happen”.

QPR have said they hope to move to a new stadium in 2018

“The plans of Old Oak Park will bring a new and vibrant destination to London with large public open spaces, new schools, waterside recreational areas, thousands of affordable homes for the local community and thousands of new jobs,” said Cargiant managing director Tony Mendes.

“We are making good progress and our public consultation will begin soon, asking for community input to assure the regeneration can bring what the residents would like within this exciting new development.

“Our design plans will be based around quality and sustainable open spaces and buildings, and will include an upgrade of the run-down Grand Union Canal.

“The team looks forward to working with the statutory authorities and the local residents to bring the regeneration plans to life.

“In establishing Old Oak Park Ltd, Cargiant is progressing plans for outline planning permission and has started conducting site surveys. We have a firm and compelling vision for Old Oak Common.”

Old Oak Park intend to submit a planning application next autumn. The planning application for Rangers’ stadium-led regeneration is currently expected to be submitted in April.
