Sheffield Wednesday 1 QPR 1

Jamie Mackie scored QPR’s goal as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

Ian Holloway’s side battled hard at Hillsborough – and they needed to as Sheffield Wednesday pushed for a winner after Sam Winnall’s equaliser early in the second half.

Mackie netted on 23 minutes, slotting past keeper Keiren Westwood after being put through by Luke Freeman.

It came a couple of minutes after Westwood had kept out Mackie’s volley after the Rangers forward had been set up by Pawel Wszolek.

Earlier, Daniel Pudil and Jordan Rhodes missed chances to put Wednesday ahead.

Pudil headed wide at the far post from six yards out after being found by Ross Wallace’s cross and Rhodes headed Gary Hooper’s cross straight at keeper Alex Smithies.

The home side had to make two substitutions in the opening half an hour, with Sam Hutchinson and then Glenn Loovens going off injured.

They nevertheless finished the first half strongly and twice went close to equalising, first when Tom Lees headed wide when unmarked and then when Winnall shot wide after being found by Adam Reach’s low cross.

But Winnall made no mistake when Nedum Onuoha failed to clear Barry Bannan’s cross and the striker finished from eight yards out.

Rhodes should have put the Owls ahead but failed to find the target with a header from another Bannan cross, and Hooper was denied by Josh Scowen’s goalline clearance.

Loan signing Kazenga LuaLua, on as a substitute, missed a great chance to put Rangers back in front late on, dragging a shot wide with just Westwood to beat following fine work by Conor Washington.
