QPR out of Carabao Cup after losing on penalties

Charlton 1 QPR 1

(Charlton won 5-3 on penalties)

Stefan Johansen’s penalty miss proved costly as QPR went out of the Carabao Cup in a shoot-out at The Valley.

Tyler Roberts’ late goal on his Rangers debut appeared to have taken them through to the second round.

The on-loan Leeds forward found the corner of the net with a superb strike from near the edge of the penalty area.

But Aaron Henry hit back for League One side Charlton with an even better strike from distance in the final minute.

And after keeper Joe Wollocott saved Rangers’ first penalty of the resulting shoot-out, the Addicks scored all five of theirs. Tyler Roberts, Olamide Shodipo and Andre Dozzell netted for Rangers.

QPR dominated large spells of the game but struggled to create clear-cut chances before Roberts and Sinclair Armstrong were sent on after an hour.

Teenage striker Armstrong immediately made an impact, with his pace and directness troubling the home defence.

Roberts’ 80th-minute opener came after the lively Armstrong chased and won the ball deep in the Charlton half.
