Hoilett scores as QPR draw at Huddersfield

Huddersfield 1 QPR 1

Junior Hoilett netted an equaliser for QPR, whose 100% start to the season came to an end despite them dominating the game.

James Vaughan put Huddersfield in front against the run of play on 35 minutes but Hoilett equalised just two minutes later.

Charlie Austin crashed a header against the bar in the second half as Rangers sensed a winner, but they couldn’t quite find the required quality in front of goal.

R’s boss Harry Redknapp handed midweek goalscorer Austin a starting berth ahead of Bobby Zamora, and he began brightly.

However, he should have done better on 11 minutes when he scuffed an effort from seven yards out when it seemed easier to score.

That sloppiness was punished. A lapse in concentration from Yun Suk-Young let in Adam Clayton, whose cross was headed home by Vaughan.

Credit to Rangers, and in particular Suk-Young, though, as they were soon level.

The South Korean’s looping cross was controlled 10 yards out by Hoilett and he cleverly poked in the equaliser.

It was one-way traffic after the break.

Strikers Andy Johnson and Austin continued to link up well with the former Burnley man rattling the crossbar on 57 minutes following an excellent Johnson centre.

Redknapp threw on Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips in the closing stages in search of a winner.

But apart from a rasping 20-yard drive that grazed the bar from Jenas, and a couple of long-range Wright-Phillips efforts, QPR failed to worry keeper Alex Smithies.

And Huddersfield nearly snatched an improbable winner as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes.

Substitute Sean Scannell broke in behind Suk-Young but Rob Green’s bravery at the feet of the Terriers winger diverted the ball wide.

QPR (4-4-2): Green; Simpson, Hill, Onuoha, Suk-Young; Granero (Wright-Phillips 69), Barton, Henry (Jenas 82), Hoilett; Johnson, Austin.
Subs not used: Murphy, Dunne, Zamora, Ehmer, O’Neil.
