Ferdinand gets three-match ban for tweet

QPR defender Rio Ferdinand has been banned for three matches and fined £25,000 for derogatory comments made on Twitter.

The Football Association charged the former England captain with misconduct after the tweet sent on 1 September.

It was in reply to a Twitter user teasing him about QPR looking for another centre-back, to which Ferdinand replied: “get ya mum in, plays the field well son! #sket”.

In Jamaican slang, ‘sket’ refers to a promiscuous woman and the FA said the charge was aggravated by being gender-related.

The 35-year-old was found guilty after a hearing on Wednesday and will also have to attend an education programme.

Ferdinand, who signed for Rangers in the summer after 12 years at Manchester United, is a member of FA chairman Greg Dyke’s commission looking at how to improve English football.
