Boss unsure whether Marseille want Barton

QPR boss Harry Redknapp says he is unsure whether Marseille still want Joey Barton.

Barton spent last season on loan with the French club after being told he was not wanted at Loftus Road.

He was hoping to join Marseille on a permanent basis but the move did not materialise and he has featured in all three of Rangers’ matches this term.

There has been speculation that Barton’s wages are a barrier to a deal being done.

However, Redknapp said: “I think Joey would have gone to Marseille, but I don’t know if they’re still there.

“I don’t know what the deal is with Marseille. I think they might have gone away. I’m not sure.”

And Redknapp says he would be happy for the controversial midfielder, 30, to stay in west London.

“Joey’s playing ever so well and is in the team on merit,” he declared.

“Not only has he been good as a player, he’s not been a minute’s problem as a person. He’s been excellent.

“I can only take him as I find him. I only knew him very slightly before, but since I’ve been here he’s come in and trained hard and worked hard.

“He’s not done anything silly, he’s just got on with his football. He’s enjoying playing. He’s showing great enthusiasm and getting on with the job.”
