Smith ‘a valuable member’ of QPR squad

Steve McClaren says Matt Smith underlined his importance to QPR by playing a key role in the FA Cup win against Portsmouth.

Millwall were interested in signing the striker on loan during the recent transfer window.

But he stayed at Loftus Road, where he scored one goal and helped set up the other in Rangers’ 2-0 victory over Pompey.

“I said at the end of the window that I’m delighted with the squad that I’ve got,” said Rangers manager McClaren.

“We didn’t make any signings but we kept players and Matt Smith was one of those we wanted to keep, because he’s certainly an impact off the bench but also put in a good performance.

“Matt is showing that he’s a valuable member of the squad who can come in and make an impact.”

Smith has spoken of his frustration at being overlooked by McClaren, who gave him a starting place on Tuesday night but has mostly used him as a substitute.

“Matt’s been very patient. He’s not had many opportunities,” McClaren said.

“In the last couple of months he’s come on, done very well, impacted well and caused opponents problems.

“He deserved his opportunity and took it very well. I thought he was a constant threat.”
