Assou-Ekotto sent off as Rangers lose again

Leicester City 1 QPR 0

Benoit Assou-Ekotto was sent off as QPR slumped to a seventh defeat in nine away matches.

David Nugent scored the winner for Premier League-bound Leicester midway through the second half when he steered the ball into the corner of the net after being set up by Danny Drinkwater.

Rangers played the final 12 minutes with 10 men after Assou-Ekotto was shown a second yellow card following a dire challenge on Andy King.

With his team facing two matches in as many days and the play-offs approaching, Rangers boss Harry Redknapp took the opportunity to rest a number of players.

With Modibo Maiga operating as a lone striker, it was perhaps inevitable that the vistors would offer only a limited threat.

They had their moments though, Niko Kranjcar bringing a fingertip save from Kasper Schmiechel after exchanging passes with Maiga, who shot wastefully wide in first-half injury time.

But King had the best two chances of the first period. He fired straight at Rob Green from close range and later rounded the Rangers keeper only to see his scuffed shot cleared off the line by Nedum Onuoha.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, making only his second appearance this year, was introduced for a second half in which Maiga again shot wide before Nugent broke the deadlock.

QPR  (4-4-1-1): Green; Simpson, Onuoha, Hughes, Yun; Benayoun (Wright-Phillips 45), Henry, O’Neil, Assou-Ekotto; Kranjcar (Morrison 82); Maiga (Zamora 72).
Subs not used: Murphy, Dunne, Keane, Donaldson.
