Whiley and McCarroll set for GB challenge

Ickenham’s Jordanne Whiley and Marc McCarroll have both been named in the Great Britain squad for next week’s BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Turkey.

Whiley, pictured, is Britain’s top female wheelchair tennis player and is currently ranked world number five in singles and two in doubles.

The 22-year-old picked up her latest doubles title last weekend at the Japan Open Super Series and will be joined in the GB team for the women’s world group by Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt.

Whiley’s partner McCarroll, 30, is the world number 15 and reached the quarter-finals in the London 2012 Paralympics.

His team-mates in the men’s world group are world number three Gordon Reid, David Phillipson and Alfie Hewett.

The World Team Cup, which starts next Monday (25 May) and runs until Sunday 31 May, is the International Tennis Federation’s flagship wheelchair tennis event.

Great Britain won three medals at last year’s tournament – gold in the quad event, silver in the women’s and a bronze in the men’s event.

Whiley said: “It’s always a privilege to play for my country and there should be a great atmosphere in Turkey once again.

“I’m really excited for the week and after winning silver for the last two years we’ll be aiming for gold this time.”
