Whiley and Lapthorne beaten at Australian Open

Jordanne Whiley

Jordanne Whiley’s hopes of a second singles grand slam title ended with a quarter-final defeat at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Ickenham-based Whiley, who won the US Open in September, was beaten 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4 by Marjolein Buis.

World number five Whiley held an early lead against the Dutchwoman but ended up losing a first-set tie-break.

She clinched the second set and held a narrow lead midway through the decider, but Buis hit back to claim victory

On Thursday, Whiley will begin her defence of the women’s doubles title as she and Lucy Shuker take on Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot.

Eastcote’s Andy Lapthorne was also beaten in his first quad singles match but still has a chance of reaching the final.

He lost his opening round-robin encounter 6-0 6-4 to world number one Dylan Alcott, who he will team up with in Thursday’s quad doubles final.

Lapthorne plays David Wagner and Lucas Sithole in his remaining singles matches.
