Whiley targets Wimbledon singles crown

Jordanne Whiley will make more history on Thursday when she plays in the inaugural women’s wheelchair singles event at Wimbledon.

Ickenham-based Whiley has won seven major doubles titles – including the last two at SW19 – but now wants to add to her trophy cabinet as the All-England Club finally follows the other three Grand Slams in offering a singles tournament.

The 24-year-old, who is the current US Open singles champion, opens up her campaign against Paralympics doubles partner – and British number two – Lucy Shuker.

Whiley said: “For us to be able to showcase our sport to the highest level in the singles event is just absolutely fantastic.

“I know, for me, this one’s the big one. I really want to do well – I’m here to win the Wimbledon singles.

“I’m pretty pleased with my draw and I’m just going to go out and play my best tennis.”

Whiley will link up with Japan’s Yui Kamiji to defend their Wimbledon doubles crown, taking on Louise Hunt and Marjolein Buis on Friday.
