Ruislip’s deaf tennis star ready to take on Europe

Ruislip’s Valerie Copenhagen says she is “feeling awesome” as she prepares to take on the continent at the European Deaf Tennis Championship.

Copenhagen joins Yorkshire’s Phoebe Suthers as one of two British women at the event in Portoroz, Slovenia, from 4 to 11 June.

The 33-year-old reached the second round in the women’s singles at last year’s first World Deaf Tennis Cbampionships in Nottingham and is hoping that will stand her in good stead this week.

Copenhagen said: “I’m feeling awesome and looking ready to play my best in this tournament.

“There’s always room for development and growth, but the experience from last year at the World Championships in Nottingham was great for giving me a taste of tennis at this level.

“I just need to remember process, spin, smile and to have fun. The GB team have been a great support.”
