Lapthorne and Whiley progress in South Africa

Andy Lapthorne and Jordanne Whiley both reached the semi-finals of the South Africa Open on Thursday.

Eastcote’s Lapthorne, fourth seed in the quad singles, had beaten home player Danny Mohlamonyan in Wednesday’s second round.

He then saw off the challenge of Israeli Itay Erenlib 6-3, 6-3 to book a place in the last four, where he will take on world number two David Wagner.

Ickenham-based Whiley emerged triumphant after a tough match against her Paralympics doubles partner Lucy Shuker.

Both sets went to tie-breaks, with Whiley winning the first 10-8 and taking the second 9-7 to clinch victory.

She will face world number one Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands in the semis.
