Gould edges out Fu in Australian Open

Martin Gould made the perfect start to the new season by beating former UK Championship runner-up Marco Fu at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The Pinner potter, who ended the last campaign by failing to make the televised stages of the World Championship, clicked into gear immediately, opening up a 3-0 lead against the world number 11.

Gould, ranked 26, made breaks of 51 and 64 in the opening frames but could only watch as Fu ground out a response, a 77 helping him to level at 3-3.

They traded the next two frames but Gould pulled himself over the line with a brilliant 76 to book a second round meeting with world number 25 Michael Holt.
