Rio 2016 round-up: Collins in sculls final, Aldred out, Harlequins man in rugby joy

Twickenham’s John Collins and partner Jonathan Walton produced a terrific performance to qualify for the final of the men’s double sculls.

Collins and Walton had to come through the repechage after coming fourth in their heat, but they were determined not to miss out in a very strong semi-final.

They were third at the halfway mark behind Croatia and Norway, but had moved into second with 500m to go.

Norway timed their response perfectly to push the Great Britain pair into third, but it was enough to send them into the final.

There was no such fortune for Putney’s Mark Aldred in the men’s lightweight four, who faded after a bright start and were edged out into fourth in the closing stages.

Three crews – Great Britain, New Zealand and France – were tightly bunched with 500m to go, chasing two qualification spots behind leaders Italy.

But the French found renewed energy and New Zealand also proved too strong to leave Britain out of medal contention.

Meanwhile, in the men’s rugby sevens, Putney’s Dan Bibby and Harlequins’ Ollie Lindsay-Hague were both involved as Great Britain achieved two group-stage victories.

Bibby went over in either half in the 31-7 win over Kenya, before being replaced by Lindsay-Hague. He then played the full game as Britain edged out Japan 21-19 in a thrilling game, which Lindsay-Hague was not involved in.
