Prince William pays a visit to Westway

The Duke of Cambridge has visited the Westway Sports Centre in Notting Hill to meet young people from difficult backgrounds and disadvantaged communities.

The youngsters are taking part in the Coach Core Programme, a new initiative that uses the principles of sports coaching as a foundation to learn new skills to improve their engagement within education and the community while also improving their health and well-being.

The Westway Sports Centre was chosen as it provides the perfect location to support the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry’s work in creating a lasting change in targeted areas, including the poorer areas across the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.westwaywilliam2

The programme helps young people to build their skills, confidence and aspirations to create a generation of inspirational role models and sports coaches.

The Coach Core programme was originally developed in partnership with Greenhouse, a London-based sports charity, to give young people the opportunity to gain work experience and comprehensive ‘on-the-job’ training.

Over half a million people have visited the Westway Sports Centre in the past 12 months and the centre has already helped create stars of the future through its tennis, football and climbing programmes.

The Westway Development Trust was formed in the 1970s and in the last financial year has generated £6.8m of charitable income, £5.9m of which has been used for sports, health, education and community initiatives.

Its chief executive Angela McConville said: “Our future regeneration plans will mean that people who live in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and surrounding areas will start seeing even greater benefit from the exciting range of sports facilities on offer at Westway.

“Enhancing local lives is at the heart of our mission. By creating a world-class sports destination at Westway, our aim is to inspire disadvantaged groups whilst tackling the health and inequality that we see across the borough.”
