Ruislip Eagles beaten in EHA Cup final

Ruislip Eagles were beaten 26-22 by Salford HC in the men’s final of the England Handball Association Cup final at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Trailing 16-10 at half-time, the west London side mounted a superb second-half comeback to level at 18-18, only for their opponents to regain control.

Competing in their third final in four years, the 2010 winners were on the back foot from the start against a Salford team that beat them twice in the league this season.

They quickly found themselves 7-3 down and after rallying following a timeout – and some excellent saves from Eagles keeper Stefan Bauer – they were overrun late in the first half and trailed 15-8.

The deficit was cut to six points at the halfway stage and the Eagles were transformed after the interval, with Joszef Csontos, Bjoern Tessmann and Denis Werner all scoring twice to leave the match all-square.

But the Manchester club hit back to lead 26-20, with two more late goals from Csontos making little difference.

“It is disappointing, because we worked so hard to come back in the second half,” Eagles manager Marc Fayemi admitted.

“We were never in the lead and had we been in front I think it could have been different, because we showed in the second half that we are a good team, but we were always chasing.

“Congratulations to Salford. They are a good team. We made mistakes and they were able to punish us.”
