Eagles ‘got away with it’ admits Carstens

Ruislip Eagles’ Lucas Carstens admits his team were lucky to beat local rivals Olympia HC at the weekend and need to up their game.

The Eagles, who suffered a shock opening-day defeat against Leeds Hornets – overcame Olympia 27-25 to register their second win of the season and their first at home.

Their opponents had made an encouraging start to the campaign, having played well against Salford and league favourites London Great Dane.

Ruislip made a good start to the match, with their counter-attacking style – and some excellent saves from keeper Tibor Szerencse – helping them open up a four-goal lead.

Gilbert Lewis got his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season and Micheal Vitello produced a clinical performance.

However, some questionable calls by the referees saw Ruislip repeatedly playing a man down and eventually led to Denis Werner being shown a red card for accumulating too many two-minute suspensions.

Having lost their only left-handed player, the team was forced to realign and alter their tactics.

But after several unforced errors left them trailing by two goals, they hit back courtesy of new signing Alex Aubard before Kuba Brzozowski converted two decisive moves to give the Eagles the edge they needed.

“It was a scruffy game and obviously, we are very happy to have secured our first league points at home against a formidable opponent,” said Carstens.

“Having said that, we need to work on our efficiency and improve on our discipline if we want to challenge for the title.

“We have had issues with converting chances in the Leeds game already and it cost us. We got away with it this time, but we work hard as a team to create chances and it is careless to waste them like that.”

In two weeks’ time the Eagles face London Great Dane in another London derby – in what promises to be their biggest test so far.

Eagles line-up: Tibor Szerencse, Stefan Bauer- Alexandre Aubard (8), Michael Vitello (4), Jakub Brzozowski (3), Tobias Stockfleth (3), Fabien Colette (3), Denis Werner (2), Jozsef Csontos (2), Gil Lewis (1), Lucas Carstens(1)
