Wiggins savours Tour de France triumph

Maida Vale’s Bradley Wiggins is celebrating after becoming the first British rider to win the Tour de France.

Wiggins, 32, finished in the chasing peloton in Sunday’s final stage in Paris with a winning margin of three minutes and 21 seconds – his victory having been sealed by a stunning time-trial win 24 hours earlier.

Thousands of British fans travelled to the Champs Elysees to witness history being made as Wiggins was crowned champion.

His triumph cements his place in the pantheon of cycling greats and will establish him as one of the country’s top sporting icons.

“I’ve got to get used to that and it’s going to take a while. You never imagine it will happen to you – it’s amazing,” he said.
