Ouseph falls to world number one Chen

Feltham’s Rajiv Ouseph failed to cause an upset at the Indonesia Open as he was beaten by world number one Chen Long.

Ouseph, who went up five places to 24 in the latest world rankings published on Thursday, had never beaten Chen in their five previous meetings.

He briefly held leads very early on in both games but once Chen got in front, the Chinese star proved hard to catch.

Chen kept Ouseph at arm’s length in the opening game, always staying three or four points ahead before winning it 21-16.

In the second, the west Londoner fought hard to level at 8-8 but Chen then won 13 of the next 15 points to complete a 21-16 21-10 victory.

Ouseph has next week off before he plays in the US Open in Brentwood, New York, where he will be the 11th seed and faces India’s Sameer Verma in round one.
