Ouseph beaten in Malaysia by Sugiarto

Rajiv Ouseph suffered defeat in the first round of the Maybank Malaysian Open to world number four Tommy Sugiarto.

Hounslow’s Ouseph, ranked 18, had never beaten the Indonesian in three previous attempts but was staying in touch during the first game, trailing 8-10 at one point.

But Sugiarto pulled away with 11 of the next 16 points to claim it 21-13.

And the tournament’s fourth seed was quickly into his groove in the second game, leading 5-0 and later 12-5 to pile the pressure on Ouseph.

The 27-year-old Londoner wasn’t able to close the gap and Sugiarto won the game 21-12.

It is Ouseph’s second first-round defeat of 2014 after his exit to home player Jong Soo Hwang at the Korea Open.
