Manager Babb leaves Hayes & Yeading

Hayes and Yeading United have parted company with manager Phil Babb.

The former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender left the club after a 3-2 defeat to Gosport Borough on Tuesday, which leaves them just one point and one place above the Conference South relegation zone.

Director of football Tristan Lewis, who acted as Babb’s assistant, will take charge of first-team affairs while a permanent successor is sought.

United are currently on a 10-match winless streak, stretching back to before Christmas.

Babb, 44, was appointed as United manager in May 2013, his first managerial role.

The club was reprieved from relegation at the end of his first season in charge after Hereford United were expelled from the Conference.

United chairman Tony O’Driscoll said: “Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t work out and changes need to be made, while they can still have an impact on the bigger picture.

“It’s not been an easy management baptism for Phil, with all the stuff going on in the background at the club, and we wish him all the best in his future aspirations and certainly hope he won’t be a stranger to the many friends he has made here.

“But, with much hard work going on behind the scenes to secure the future of this club, I think we need a change on the pitch now to ensure that all the off the field activity isn’t in vain.”

O’Driscoll added the club hoped to appoint a successor quickly, with 10 games left in the season.
