Cox double as United edge out Stones

Hayes and Yeading United 2 Wealdstone 1

Pat Cox’s first half brace was enough for Hayes and Yeading to take the bragging rights from an entertaining west London derby.

The striker tucked away an early penalty and doubled the lead seconds before half-time with a perfectly timed header.

Veteran striker Scott McGleish pulled one back for Wealdstone as they dominated territory and possession in a feisty second half, but they couldn’t muster an equaliser.

Despite not having won a game in Conference South this season, the Stones began on the front foot – but they were stunned by a sudden 12th-minute penalty decision as skipper Sean Cronin was adjudged to have hauled down Cox off the ball.

With a Non-League Day crowd of 406 watching on, Cox dusted himself off to power home the spot-kick for his first goal of the campaign.

McGleish netted with a spectacular bicycle kick but it was ruled out for offside – and Cox went on to score a crucial second goal on the stroke of half-time, getting the better of Cronin again to head past Jonathan North.

Stones were firmly in the ascendancy throughout the second half and reduced the arrears five minutes in when the 40-year-old McGleish converted Tom Collins’ cross-shot.

As the visitors pressed, Luke O’Nien clipped the stanchion with a free-kick, United keeper Calum Kitscha was forced into a save at his near post and Tom Hamblin headed over from a corner.

United were limited to a handful of counter-attacks, Rhys Murrell-Williamson firing just wide and Cox producing a late save from North, but they held out for a win that lifts them to eighth.

Ryman Premier Division round-up

Teenage substitute Paris Mason netted a dramatic injury-time equaliser to earn Hampton and Richmond a point against Dulwich in front of a record Champion Hill attendance.

A crowd of 2,856 paid what they want on the gate as Dulwich went in front in the 55th minute through Ashley Carew.

Ben Harris levelled from the spot after Kershaney Samuels was sent-off but the 10-man home side restored their lead when Carew fired into the top corner from the edge of the box.

However, the visitors snatched a draw when 17-year-old Mason slammed home a loose ball in the dying minutes.

Hendon had to settle for a point after they threw away a two-goal lead at Kingstonian.

Leon Smith opened the scoring in first half injury time and Sam Murphy’s penalty seemed to put Gary McCann’s men in control.

But Kingstonian stormed back with two goals in five minutes midway through the second half from Andre McCollin, and Hendon were reduced to 10 late on when Oliver Sprague was sent-off.

Former Hayes and Yeading loanee Freddie Ladapo struck twice for Grays to condemn Harrow Borough to a heavy home defeat.

Joao Carlos put Grays ahead just before half-time but Harrow levelled early in the second half through Spencer Bellotti.

Ladapo’s brace, in the 68th and 77th minutes, gave Grays a grip on the game and Chris Bryan added a fourth late on.
