Robson hits record-breaking double ton

Middlesex 428-5 v Warwickshire

Sam Robson recorded his highest-ever first-class score to help Middlesex to maximum batting points – but rain once again caused havoc with play.

Just 40 overs were possible on day two at Edgbaston but Robson continued to help himself to the Warwickshire bowling and is still unbeaten on 215, beating his previous best knock of 204.

The opener is now the County Championship’s leading run scorer this season, with 579 to his name in seven innings.

Neil Dexter scored 46 and Gareth Berg 23 not out as Middlesex reached 428-5 by the time the heavens opened.

It puts them in a very healthy position but they will be looking for two dry days to force victory.

The landmarks tumbled quickly at the start of the day. First, Robson and Dexter took Middlesex past 300 and then Robson reached his 150 soon afterwards.

With the rainclouds circling, Middlesex were keen to score quickly but they were pegged back when Dexter fell just short of his half century, caught by Jonathan Trott off Boyd Rankin.

John Simpson (19) shared in a partnership of 48 with Robson before the wicket-keeper edged Jeetan Patel to Rikki Clarke at slip in the last over before lunch, to leave Middlesex on 373-5.

In spite of a delay to the afternoon session, Robson continued to look comfortable and reached his 200 from 303 balls, including 20 fours.

The best was yet to come, though. Having equalled his best first-class score, Robson surpassed it in style – with the first six of the Middlesex innings.

Skipper Chris Rogers will now face a dilemma – whether to allow Robson to cut loose on Friday morning or declare overnight and start chasing victory.
