Missing out on win ‘hurts’ captain Rogers

Frustrated Middlesex skipper Chris Rogers admitted not beating County Championship leaders Sussex ‘hurt’ having dominated large parts of the match.

The visitors were 277 runs behind on first innings – largely thanks to Rogers’ 184 and Ollie Rayner’s five wickets – and were effectively 27-7 shortly after lunch on the final day.

But an impressive fightback on Saturday afternoon, led by Luke Wright’s career best 187, salvaged a draw for the Sharks.

Rogers said: “To put ourselves in such a strong position and not win, we feel we have missed out and that hurts a little.

“But we have got to look at the positives and there’s a lot to like [from that performance].

“We have played some excellent cricket so far [this season] and got the better of a lot of good sides. We’re in good spirits right now, hopefully we can keep it that way.”

The Australian praised his bowlers for their efforts in extracting all they could from a flat Lord’s pitch as they attempted to press for victory.

He added: “We were desperate and the wicket was pretty dead – there wasn’t anything we didn’t try. We did everything we could to get wickets.”
