Middlesex hampered by rain on day one

Close, day one: Middlesex v Somerset 130-4

Middlesex 1pt, Somerset 0pts

Middlesex managed to take four wickets off Somerset on a rain-swept first day at the home of cricket.

The players were forced off several times over the course of the day before play was abandoned just after 5pm, with Somerset 130-4.

Middlesex had two wickets with just a single run conceded in the third over when Nick Compton, who had replaced the dismissed opener Alex Barrow (0) an over earler, was bowled out by Tim Murtagh.

The visitors were then three down for 45 when Arul Suppiah allowed a Toby Roland-Jones delivery to skip past him and onto the stumps, and they were kept to 64-3 at lunch.

England Lions batsmen James Hildreth and Craig Kieswetter built a solid partnership in the second session and put a combined 80 on the board.

But Hildreth was caught behind by wicketkeeper John Simpson just after picking up his half-century, as Gareth Berg bagged a wicket in the 47th over.

Kieswetter, now in partnership with another England Lion Jos Butler, added a few extra singles before the players were forced off just after 3pm.

They were unable to retake to the field again after rain worsened over London
