Ireland call for Middlesex bowler

Middlesex bowler Tim Murtagh has flown to the United Arab Emirates after being called up to the Ireland squad for the remainder of their World t20 qualifying campaign.

Murtagh has been brought in as cover for Alex Cusack, who faces a fitness test on an injured hamstring on Thursday.

“I am really honoured to have been selected to join up with the Ireland squad,” he said.

“I’m excited at the prospect of playing my part in helping Ireland to qualify for the World t20 later this year in Sri Lanka.”

Ireland won six of their seven preliminary group matches played over the last week, which saw them finish second in Group B behind group winners Namibia.

They now have to win a further three play-off matches, starting against Canada on Thursday, to secure a place in the finals.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: “We’re really delighted for Tim and are pleased that he has been rewarded with a call up to the Ireland side and now has the opportunity to play international cricket.”
