We failed to punish Newcastle, says Jol

Fulham boss Martin Jol felt his team paid the price for not capitalising on Newcastle’s uncertain start at St James’ Park.

Hatem Ben Arfa’s late strike – the Magpies’ first league goal of the season – condemned Jol’s men to defeat.

Having endured a miserable opening to the campaign, Newcastle looked nervous in the opening stages but were well on top by the time the deadlock was broken with four minutes remaining.

“To concede in the last five minutes is very disappointing,” Jol admitted.

“Dimitar Berbatov was pulling the strings in the first half and we looked good. The only thing was in the final third – we had a few good situations but there wasn’t a real cutting edge.

“We have to do better in that but for the rest I thought we looked better than ever before in an away match against Newcastle.

“We probably had 50% of the possession. We should have punished them in the first half. It was even and we played probably better than them.

“We were a handful but we couldn’t finish them off and couldn’t score the vital goal.”
