Striker Trotta back at Brentford on loan

Marcello Trotta, whose penalty miss cost Brentford promotion to the Championship, has returned to Griffin Park on loan from Fulham.

The 20-year-old striker rejoins the club until 5 January and the Bees have also captured France Under-20 centre-back Raphaël Calvet, 19, from Auxerre on a three-year-deal.

Trotta scored nine goals in 30 appearances during a loan spell that lasted from November until the end of last season.

The player’s arrival is controversial, however, after he missed a spot-kick in the dying seconds of Brentford’s final game of the season against Doncaster.

He was not the club’s designated penalty taker and refused to hand over the ball to club captain Kevin O’Connor before blasting it against the crossbar.

Doncaster then galloped to the other end of the pitch and scored, sealing their own place in the Championship and condemning Brentford to the play-offs.

Trotta remained at the club and featured in Brentford’s play-off campaign, but they were ultimately beaten by Yeovil 2-1 in the final at Wembley.
