Fulham boss bemoans defensive lapses

Fulham manager Martin Jol bemoaned his team’s poor defending in their 3-0 defeat at home to neighbours Chelsea.

Despite dominating much of the first half, Jol’s men found themselves two down at the interval after David Luiz’s 35-yard strike and John Terry’s header from Juan Mata’s cross.

And Terry headed home again in the second half, sealing a resounding Blues victory.

Jol said: “We didn’t close down Luiz for their first goal.

“Luiz tries those kinds of things and has a shot on him, but you have got to close him down.

“For the second goal, you have got to get out to the flank and stop the cross.

“In the first half an hour we controlled the game and it’s disappointing that we didn’t score.”

Jol was particularly unhappy with Chelsea’s third goal, which was scored following a corner.

“In the last few months we did well defending set-pieces and tonight we didn’t, and that is also disappointing,” he said.
