Fulham pick up point in stalemate at Charlton

Charlton 0 Fulham 0

Fulham were unable to move within a point of the automatic promotion places after being held to a draw by struggling Charlton.

In a match devoid of real quality at The Valley, the Whites went closest to scoring either side of half-time through Joe Bryan and Michael Hector.

Bryan was released on goal by Tom Cairney’s defence-splitting pass, only to fire narrowly wide of the post, before an unmarked Hector glanced Ivan Cavaleiro’s inviting corner off-target from close range.

It turned out to be their best chances of the game as they struggled to break down a resilient Charlton, who themselves fashioned chances after being forced to defend throughout most of the opening 45 minutes.

Erhun Oztumer failed to capitalise on a Tim Ream mistake by shanking his effort high into the stands, before a vital Cyrus Christie intervention denied Jonny Williams as he tried to meet Lyle Taylor’s cross at the end of a blistering counter-attack.

In the end, neither side could find a way through as they each settled for a point.

Fulham will feel they dropped two points. Nevertheless, the gap between them and second-placed Leeds was reduced to three points.
