Fulham keeper hailed for ‘Banks-like save’

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen hailed keeper David Stockdale for a “Gordon Banks-like save” during the FA Cup game against Norwich.

Stockdale, playing in place of the injured Maarten Stekelenburg, produced a stunning stop to keep out Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s header from Javier Garrido’s cross.

And Meuelensteen declared: “David Stockdale had a Gordon Banks-like save to keep us in the game.

“It was definitely one of the best saves I have seen. It was a fantastic cross by Garrido and a great leap by van Wolfswinkel.

“I honestly thought it was in but it was a fantastic save. That’s what makes football so exciting sometimes.”

Darren Bent put Fulham ahead before Robert Snodgrass’ equaliser secured a third-round replay for Chris Hughton’s side.

Meuelensteen added: “We didn’t want it [a replay] and I don’t think Chris wanted it either, but that’s how it turned out. A draw’s a good result away from home.”
