Fulham are beaten by late Cisse goal

Newcastle 1 Fulham 0

Papiss Cisse’s injury-time goal gave Newcastle a deserved victory at St James’ Park.

Fulham defended resolutely and were helped by the woodwork on three occasions before Cisse struck.

Martin Jol’s side failed to clear their lines and Cisse poked the ball past keeper Mark Schwarzer.

Jol sprang a surprise by handing a starting place to Stanislav Manolev, who came in for Ashkan Dejagah, while Eyong Enoh made his first start since joining from Ajax.

The Whites made a bright start, with Dimitar Bebatov going close with a 20-yard effort and Manolev having a close-range shot saved by Magpies keeper Tim Krul.

Newcastle stepped up a gear after the break and Vurnon Anita’s strike from distance was deflected on to the bar by Emmanuel Frimpong, who replaced Enoh early in the second half.

And the visitors had a lucky escape when Yoan Goufrran headed Sylvain Marveaux’s corner against the post via a touch off Sascha Riether’s arm and Cisse’s follow-up also hit the post.

Fulham remained a threat at the other end and Krul was called into action again, this time to brilliantly keep out Berbatov’s header from John Arne Riise’s free-kick.

But Cisse had the final word, prompting wild celebrations from the home crowd and Newcastle boss Alan Pardew.

Fulham: Schwarzer, Riether, Hangeland, Senderos, Riise, Manolev (Rodallega 80), Karagounis, Enoh (Frimpong 50), Duff, Ruiz, Berbatov.
Subs not used: Etheridge, Richardson, Hughes, Frei, Emanuelson.
