Swansea v Chelsea: five key battles

The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek are options for Hiddink

Chelsea take their 15-match unbeaten Premier League run to Swansea this weekend. Here are five potential battles we think could be important at the Liberty Stadium.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek v Jack Cork
After his goal against Aston Villa, Loftus-Cheek is likely to be given another chance to enhance his reputation. Up against him in midfield will be a reminder of how rarely the Chelsea youth system pays off. Cork, who captained the Blues’ youth and reserve teams during a spell between 2006 and 2011, is now a Premier League regular after loan spells in League One and the Championship.

Alexandre Pato v Ashley Williams
Pato also netted against Villa and may get his first Chelsea start, with Loic Remy injured and Diego Costa suspended. Williams, approaching his 350th appearance for Swansea and on the verge of leading Wales into Euro 2016, will pose a stiffer challenge than Joleon Lescott but it may be just what the ring-rusty Brazilian needs.

John Mikel Obi v Leroy Fer
Dutchman Fer, on loan from QPR, has started four of the Swans’ last five games and laid on goals against Norwich and Bournemouth in recent weeks. Mikel, though, is playing with confidence and his performance will be crucial to Chelsea winning the midfield battle.

Matt Miazga v Bafetimbi Gomis
The third debutant against Villa, Miazga, could be retained given John Terry’s continued absence. The American is likely to partner Branislav Ivanovic again, unless Gary Cahill recovers fully from his tendon strain. It will be another examination of Miazga’s potential, against the physical style of Gomis.

Pedro v Angel Rangel
Although Willian is likely to be fit enough to return, Pedro’s two goals at Villa Park should see him start again. If he plays on the left, he will come up against compatriot Rangel, a solid performer but prone to the odd silly foul in key areas.
