QPR needed penalties to see off Swindon and secure a place in the second round of the EFL Cup. Here’s how we rated Rangers’ players in the game at Loftus Road.

Matt Ingram: 8

Once again the young keeper impressed when given a chance. He produced a number of saves in normal time, denying Luke Norris on four occasions, before keeping out two spot-kicks in the shoot-out to help Rangers get through.

Darnell Furlong: 7

Showed he is deceptively good in the air for his height, almost scoring his first senior goal when his header from a corner hit the bar. A header from another corner was saved. Defensively his inexperience shows at times but this was a good display.

Nedum Onuoha: 6

The Rangers skipper has had better games. He was caused problems by Swindon’s lively attack but stuck to the task and won a number of challenges.

Joel Lynch: 5

Lacking sharpness after a pre-season hamstring problem and must now be assessed after picking up a new injury that forced him off in the second half. Was off the pace before that.

James Perch: 5

Has produced some decent performances at left-back. This wasn’t one of them. He was careless with the ball too often and too slow to close down at times.

Karl Henry: 6

Not bad on the ball, keeping things simple in the middle of the park, but Swindon were able to play around him too easily.

Jordan Cousins: 6

Sloppy on the ball at times but brings the kind of ‘legs’ in midfield that Rangers have lacked for a long time. His athleticism is a real asset and Cousins looks like being a key player this season.

Yeni Ngbakoto: 6

Scored on his debut and showed glimpses of his ability. Will need time to get up to speed following his recent move to England, but this was a decent enough start.

Nasser El Khayati: 6

Not great off the ball, and struggled to make an impact through the middle, but he had some good moments when he drifted out wide, not least when setting up the opening goal with some clever work on the left.

Olamide Shodipo: 6

Raw, but always willing to take people on and use his pace to good effect. Plays with an obvious enthusiasm that gets fans on his side.

Conor Washington: 6

Tapped in to register his first competitive goal for QPR, but his all-round performance was disappointing. Tried to play the role of ‘first defender’ that boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink demands of his strikers, but several times Washington allowed a Swindon defender to give him the slip and come away with the ball – much to Hasselbaink’s obvious frustration.

Tjaronn Chery: 7

A classy display after coming on – class summed up by his turn and pass to Washington for the second goal and the way the Dutchman tucked away his penalty in the shoot-out.

Sebastian Polter: 7

Also made an impact when he came on, galloping down the right and crossing for Chery to tee up Washington for that second goal.

Cole Kpekawa: 6

Seemed overly anxious to impress when he gave the ball away a couple of times after coming on. Used the ball well besides that though and got forward when possible.
