Man Utd v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea earned a battling point against Manchester United on Sunday. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Thibaut Courtois: 8
Could do nothing about the two United efforts that hit the woodwork but made several fine saves, most notably an astonishing block to keep out Ander Herrera’s point-blank shot in the second half.

Branislav Ivanovic: 5
Showed limited ambition going forward as was pre-occupied with trying repel the constant pressure out wide. Too easily beaten when Anthony Martial hit the post, but made a couple of decent interceptions and stuck to his task.

Kurt Zouma: 6
A nervy slip almost gifted a goal after the interval and he was almost caught out positionally on a couple of occasions, but made several impressive challenges – including one vital late sliding tackle.

John Terry: 7
Desperately unlucky not to score with an early header and defended with a calmness and authority that has been lacking in the defence for the majority of the season.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Should have scored on the follow-up after the break, and supported well in attack. Worked tirelessly despite often being over-run out wide and was more solid than Ivanovic

Nemanja Matic: 7
Had a brilliant second half, closing down, rampaging forward and showing signs of the player that so impressed in big games last season. But made a terrible hash of a glorious one-on-one chance, taking an iffy first touch and shooting hopelessly over.

John Mikel Obi: 6
Made several crucial interceptions, doing a good job screening and breaking up play in central areas. The Nigerian was less impressive when trying to use the ball to instigate attacks.

Pedro: 5
Was busy and involved throughout and unlucky not score after the break, but was more miss than hit when in possession. The Spaniard’s displays are reminiscent of Willian’s when the Brazilian first arrived in the country; he needs to add quality to his obvious workrate.

Oscar: 6
Covered a tremendous amount of ground, usually without getting the ball as United dominated possession. But his selfless running, and the odd glimpse of quality, were both much needed and obvious. Could have easily had his leg broken by a horrible late Wayne Rooney foul.

Willian: 6
Chelsea’s player of the season so far was not quite his normal self. Was steady before the break, but struggled in the second half after a nasty late lunge by Morgan Schneiderlin that could easily have seen the United man sent off.

Eden Hazard: 7
Clearly not totally match sharp or fully fit and was subjected to countless cynical and late challenges. Grew in confidence after an edgy start and looked inventive and dangerous until very late on. A couple of typically neat turns and mazy runs almost led to goals, but not comfortable with his back to goal.

Ramires: 7
Some much-needed strong running and strong tackling lifted the midfield just when the team were looking jaded.
